A solid roof with a plastered ceiling, roof windows or a lantern turns a glass box into a room you use every day.
Start with the problem. Each one has a fix, and the fix has a price.

Sun through a glass or plastic roof turns the room into a greenhouse by late morning.

An old roof loses heat fast, so the room sits empty from October to April.

Leaks usually start at the box gutter, the wall flashing or tired seals.

Rain on polycarbonate can drown out the television.

Warm, damp air meets a cold roof and runs down the frames.

Old polycarbonate goes yellow, green and brittle with age.
Typical fitted prices for a medium conservatory (about 4m x 3.5m). Your quotes will confirm the exact figure.

Modern solar control, self cleaning glass that keeps the light and blocks much of the heat and glare.
Fresh multiwall polycarbonate sheets on the existing frame. The cheapest fix for a tired or leaking roof.
A solid insulated roof with built in glazed panels or roof windows, so you get warmth and daylight together.
Insulated panels that replace the polycarbonate in the existing frame, or line it from inside. The budget route to a warmer room.
A solid perimeter ceiling with a glass lantern in the middle, often with new insulated walls or columns.
In a Which? survey of 3,037 conservatory owners in April 2026, the most common regret was that the temperature is hard to control.
The roof is the biggest surface in the room. An old glass or polycarbonate roof lets heat out all winter and lets the sun pour in all summer. The chart shows both, using the figures manufacturers publish: heat lost on the left, sun's heat let in on the right. A solid tiled roof barely registers on either side.
Medium size, fitted. Faceted and multi-section roofs take longer to fit, so they cost more.

For a medium conservatory (about 4m x 3.5m) in 2026, typical fitted prices are:
Victorian, P-shape and T-shape roofs cost more than lean-to roofs of the same floor area. See the full cost guide for every style and size.
Usually not. Replacing the roof of an existing conservatory normally falls under permitted development as long as the height and footprint stay within the limits. You may need permission if the house is listed, in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, or if the original planning consent attached conditions. Check with your council if any of those apply. Planning permission guide.
Yes. LABC is clear that swapping a glass or polycarbonate roof for a solid one needs a building regulations application, because the conservatory stops being an exempt glazed structure. Building control checks the structure and the insulation (a new roof should reach a U-value of 0.15). Good installers make the application and hand you a completion certificate. A like for like glazed roof on an exempt conservatory normally stays exempt. Building regulations guide.
A new polycarbonate roof takes one to two days, a glass roof two to four days, and a lightweight tiled roof usually three to six days including plastering and electrics. An orangery conversion with new walls can take two to three weeks. The old roof comes off on day one, and the installer should keep the room weathertight each night.
Most can, with the right system. Lightweight tiled roofs are designed to sit on existing uPVC or aluminium frames, usually with added structural support such as a ring beam and internal posts. A surveyor should check the frames, the base and the dwarf walls first. If the base has moved or the frames are failing, you may need new frames or a new base, which changes the price.
It will be darker than a glass roof, but most people find it comfortable because the glazed walls still let plenty of light in. If light matters to you, ask for glazed panels or roof windows in the new roof (a hybrid roof), and add LED spotlights in the plastered ceiling.
There is no government grant aimed at conservatory roofs. Schemes such as ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme target the main house, and conservatories are generally outside them. Be wary of adverts promising a "conservatory roof grant". They are usually a discount offer from an installer.
A tiled roof is warmer in winter, cooler in summer and quieter in rain, and it makes the room feel like part of the house. A modern solar control glass roof keeps the light and costs less, but still runs cooler in winter and warmer in summer than a tiled roof. If you want to use the room every day of the year, tiled usually wins. Tiled vs glass compared.
