Conservatory roof heat loss calculator
How much heat escapes through your conservatory roof each winter, what that costs, and what a new roof would save. Uses published U-values and Met Office degree days for your region.
How it works
Heat loss through a surface is its U-value multiplied by its area and the temperature difference across it. Over a heating season, degree days stand in for the temperature difference: they add up how far below 15.5°C each day falls. So a year's heat loss through the roof is U x area x degree days x 24 hours. We take the roof area as your floor area plus 10% for the pitch, and the degree days from the Met Office 1991 to 2020 averages for your region.
Gas boilers are taken as 90% efficient, electric heaters as 100% and heat pumps as producing 3 units of heat per unit of electricity.
How accurate is this?
It uses the standard heat loss formula with published U-values and Met Office degree days for your region. Real bills also depend on the walls, floor, draughts, how warm you keep the room and for how long, so treat the result as a fair guide to the difference the roof makes, not a bill forecast.
Why does the roof matter so much?
In most conservatories the roof is the largest single surface and, if it is old polycarbonate or glass, one of the worst insulated. A tiled roof with a U-value around 0.15 loses roughly a tenth of the heat of 25mm polycarbonate through the same area.
